Throwback Thursday Mini Reviews

Hey everyone! I’m filling in my Thursday post this week with 4 shorter reviews adapted and expanded from my Goodreads. I’m moving to a sweet new location with a fancy reading room/slash office so expect plenty of full reviews coming real soon but for now… here’s some filler cause I’m busy!

These are some 5 star reviews that I can’t stop recommending just because I read them a while ago. Enjoy the recommendations and please consider using the affiliate links to purchase one or all of them. It is at no extra cost to you and would help me and an author out greatly. (And I could use every penny after this move 😅) Thanks!

Lighter than my Shadow book cover

Lighter than My Shadow

Author Katie Green

Lighter than my Shadow is a memoir graphic novel by author Katie Green about her experience with anorexia and surviving eating disorders. It’s a simple and honest memoir that outlines the never fully complete path to recovery as well as the seriousness of these conditions.

I would have read it all in one sitting if I hadn’t started so very late at night. I can highly recommend this one especially for young people who are struggling with their weight or appearance.

It’s a touching story that will open your eyes and your heart.

Stuff Matters book cover

Stuff Matters: Exploring the Marvelous Materials that Shape Our Man-Made World

Author Mark Miodownik

I can’t stop recommending this book to people.

It sounds so boring on the surface, it’s a nonfiction book about materials. Like glass, concrete, iron, etc. But it’s so fascinating! The author makes this subject so interesting and I couldn’t put the book down.

He discusses how these every day items are made and used all around us. You’ll look around your own room with a whole new perspective.

There is a sequel out now that I intend to buy and write a full review for eventually. I honestly hope he keeps making more of these books because I learned so very much about a subject I didn’t even know I knew so little about. Definitely pick this one up!

1Q84 book cover

1Q84

Author Haruki Murakami

I love Murakami. When I read The Wind Up Bird Chronicles it became one of my all time favorite books. I figured that was his best and hesitated to read more. After reading 1Q84 and having it jump high on my list of all time favorite books as well I can’t wait to read everything he’s ever written.

Honestly, I’m glad I read this one before I started this blog though. The spoiler full review would be thousands of words long. So much happens in this book and I wouldn’t want to leave anything out. But it’s also better if you go in cold and just let it unfurl for you.

Murakami creates a mesmerizing world that is just slightly askew from the one we are familiar with and you get to follow two protagonists as they navigate their way through it to find each other.

It’s beautiful and touching and sad and uplifting and funny and sexy and everything you’d ever want a book to be. Don’t be intimidated by it’s length.

The Hate U Give book cover

The Hate U Give

Author Angie Thomas

There are many strong divides in America today. If you have a hard time understanding where you fall ask yourself if you have ever had to have a conversation about how to survive an interaction with the police. If you haven’t, that’s a privilege you shouldn’t take for granted.

This book follows Starr as she navigates both worlds. Her upbringing from the projects in the ghetto and her high school in the rich white neighborhood. She struggles with how to act differently between her family and her school friends. Her day to day struggles of how to talk in mixed company are just as real and important as her struggles with grief and the intensely flawed American justice system. This is an approachable novel about one of the most important topics our nation faces in this age.

This is one of those rare books that lives up to the hype.
