Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits, Thriller Review

Author David Wong

Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits is a comedy thriller from David Wong, the author of John Dies in the End. If you know his earlier work and enjoyed his unusual storytelling then this one will also be for you. If you found John Dies in the End to be too chaotic, this one is slightly more grounded. Slightly.

Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits opens with our heroine Zoey attempting to get her cat down from the roof not knowing that she is currently being stalked by someone interested in live streaming her murder. If that doesn’t have you hooked already then I cannot help you!

This serial killer has titanium jaws and wants to bite her to death for his rather substantial follower count. This sets the stage rather well for the type of near future in which this book takes place. She’s rescued by a stranger in a fancy suit, well, by his hologram, and the book takes off from there.

Zoey is actually being hunted by all sorts of maniacs looking to cash in on the bounty placed on her. She has to quickly decide who she can trust and how to survive in a society far different from her rural home town.

Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits is immensely entertaining. It’s action packed and creative. Zoey is charming as she adapts to her new roles and I was rooting for her the whole time. I even came to be charmed by the interesting set of side characters she’s forced to work with.

It doesn’t hurt that the villain in this novel is the personification of toxic masculinity. Basically the whole concept of toxic masculinity is the bad guy here and I’m a big fan of anything that cuts it down to size.

I think you’ll know right away if this book is for you or not. Honestly, the title alone should be a giveaway. You’re either immediately intrigued and see the humor or you think it’s silly and you’re too good for a wild ride through the city of Tabula Ra$a. If you’re the latter, treat yourself once in a while, not everything has to be heavy!

Give in to Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits, enjoy the ride. I’m lookig forward to reading the next book in the series and many other books by David Wong for years to come.
