Sunstone Book 2, Graphic Novel Review

Sunstone Book 2 by author and Illustrator Stjepan Šejić

Sunstone Book 2 is the continuation of the Sunstone series. Read the full review of Sunstone Book 1.

Sunstone Book 2 is the omnibus collection that completes Ally and Lisa’s love story. It’s a straight continuation of the events in Book 1. We start with Ally and Lisa attempting to be roommates, friends, lovers, and BDSM partners, without admitting that they’re in a romantic relationship.

Obviously, this is a relationship dynamic that is impossible to maintain long term. They are both developing strong feelings for each other but both are too scared to admit it. This causes tension, jealousy, resentment, and everything else we’ve all experienced in relationships that we were too scared to progress but also too scared to lose.

The Sunstone series captures the emotional volleys of relationships like no other book I’ve ever read. It’s so beautifully and infuriatingly relatable. You’ll see yourself in Ally and Lisa and you’ll want to scream at both of them to stop making the stupid mistakes we’ve all made before.

But Sunstone also captures that wonderful early relationship anxiety. Those butterflies in the stomache that make you feel absolutely sick but you can’t stop smiling. That paradox of lovesickness that you can only feel when you first start falling hard for a new love. I found myself smiling ear to ear when Ally and Lisa would get closer to each other.

Sunstone Book 2 has a happy ending but the series is far from over. Ally and Lisa have plenty of friends and ex lovers who also have stories to explore. From here, Sunstone branches off into these side stories, creating a BDSM extended universe.

Speaking of, the BDSM aspect is still strong in this book. Sexuality and consensual violence are strong themes, Sunstone is still very not for kids. But the art and concepts are handled tastefully and knowledgeably. BDSM relationships are frequently misrepresented in the media and Sunstone is the only series I’ve found that does it justice.

Above all else Sunstone Book Two is a romance. It just happens to also be very very sexy, like any good romance story should be. I fully encourage all adult readers to read Sunstone and see how this representation of the BDSM community is healthy, consensual, and empowering.
