Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles by author Mark Russell and illustrator Mike Feehan

Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles is a rare find. It’s a DC comic book that takes an old Hana Barbara character and breathes refreshingly original life into him. Snagglepuss is a pink cat, in this book he is also a gay playwright suffering the consequences of McCarthyism. That better get you hooked, it’s a fascinating concept.

Fans of BoJack Horseman should consider this one a must read. It deals with a lot of the same fears, emotions, and human adult sized talking animals. A small genre but an effective one. If you haven’t yet watched Netflix’s BoJack Horseman I strongly suggest you remedy that soon. One of my favorite television shows of all time.

Snagglepuss is married to his beard to hide the fact that he’s gay from the public. Although his delicate mannerisms and bold clothing choices hardly help keep this secret.

He’s flamboyant and an artist during a time that art itself was considered un-manly. Him and his fellow artists are targeted by the House Committee Against Un-American Activities attempting to flush out the filthy commies. They are encouraged to rat out any communists in order to protect themselves but the truth is they’re all going to get hurt.

For anyone who went to a standard US public school and didn’t receive a proper education this is a parallel to real life events and is in no way some nightmare fantasy, this shit happened. Remember kids, never trust the government!

The Snagglepuss Chronicles takes a remarkable premise and loads it with real emotion. Huckleberry Hound steals the show with his classic hang dog depression, but this time in an unfortunately real interpretation. He’s so tragic and I feel for him deeply.

The art pairs well with the plot and characters. Together they create a truly fabulous story that has been underrated for far too long. Before discovering it on DC Infinite Universe I had never even heard of it. Now, I’d love to have some of these variant covers or even the whole series for my collection.

Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles has been one of my favorite comic books of 2021, and I’m writing this in December. Snagglepuss is a star, I strongly recommend this standalone.
