Years ago I was going through a very hard period of abrupt change and grieving. My mom gave me a copy of a book about the stages of grief that was common sense at best, judgmental at worst. My brother gave me a copy of Hyperbole and a Half. I love my brother, he’s the best.

Allie Brosh made me feel like all of my dark sad feelings were normal. I wasn’t the only one feeling them right now or ever. She also managed to make me laugh.

And on top of that the art is spectacular. It’s old timey seriousness perfectly compliments the surreal humor.

Every single page is packed with comedic gold as long as you can give in to a little black humor absurdism. And sometimes that is exactly what the doctor ordered for when the real world headlines look the same as the headlines from The Onion.

David Sedaris is a staple. You could really pick up any of his books and have the same effect. One story will make you feel seen, another will make you laugh, and another will make you glad you’re not him.
