Thank you so much to author Shannon McDermott for providing me with a copy of So You Want to Fly Private: The Rules in exchange for this honest review.
Typically when people think of nonfiction books they think of history or some heavy subject designed more for education than entertainment. I strongly suggest stepping into the world of humorous nonfiction to broaden your knowledge on a subject but also get a good laugh. So You Want to Fly Private: The Rules combines hilarious real life anecdotes with a lot of experience to teach you all about the strange world of private flight.
The author, pen name Shannon McDermott, has talked to dozens of career Corporate Flight Attendants (CFAs) and is here to guide you through all the dos and don’ts of being a passenger on one of these very expensive flights. I’d love to take one just because I loathe air travel but I’m not sure that’ll ever happen. Unless this book review hobby of mine suddenly starts making me money somehow…
So You Want to Fly Private is compiled of simple rules, stories from CFAs and pilots, and some juicy celebrity gossip. Names are left out for obvious reasons but you can use some clues to figure out who a couple of these celebrities are and be wowed by their behavior thousands of feet in the sky. Good or bad.
Many of the stories are tales of the worst work days any of us could imagine but others are sweet and showcase movie stars being friendly and down to earth. There’s a good balance of feel good and schadenfreude to keep the reader entertained throughout.
The rules for flying private include guidance on joining the Mile High Club, how to behave like a decent human being, and please for the love of goodness leave a tip, among others. I’m totally not surprised the rule “don’t be an asshole” needs to be said, people lose their minds on commercial flights so of course it’s the same everywhere else.
The only part of the book I didn’t care for was a history of flight and planes at the end. I’ve worked in the aviation industry before and I’ve just never cared about aircraft. I don’t know, just no part of me cares about how many engines one has versus another or whatever specs. I don’t care about cars either, these things just don’t interest me. So, that is a personal and individual reason to not like only a few pages of this book. If you like that stuff then don’t listen to me.
The bulk of the book is highly entertaining and reads quickly. I could easily picture these luxe planes filled with glamorous people acting a damn fool. So You Want to Fly Private is a perfect way to break up your nonfiction reading list with something lighter. Step into this exclusive world of the wealthy elite but make sure to follow the rules.
