Becoming by Michelle Obama
We did not deserve the Obamas. I am more sure of that now than ever before. I’m American but I have found it increasingly difficult to feel any pride in that title. Every year under Trump gets harder and harder to want to claim my nationality.
After reading Michelle Obama talk about living the American dream I am only more saddened by how far backwards we’ve gone in only four years.
But don’t worry, this book is far more uplifting, encouraging, and empowering than it is anything negative.
Michelle Obama manages to take her absolutely unique and powerful story and make it relatable. When she talks about growing up and being an aimless overachiever I saw myself in her.
Throughout her entire story, even to living in the White House, I could find myself relating to her as a person. Even she needed to find moments of quiet alone time or to just watch television at the end of a hard day.
The beauty of a good memoir is that you get to see a story unlike your own but humanized in a way that shows how alike we all really are. Becoming is one of the best examples of this I have ever read.
It’s also just beautifully written. It’s captivating and emotional with moments of levity that put a smile on my face. I found myself feeling so strongly for her experiences. I cried when she described her father’s final moments and I felt so warm inside when she described her and Barack’s first kiss.
She doesn’t shy away from honesty either. Becoming openly discusses issues like her first miscarriage and how she has always been a little resentful of Barack throwing himself so fully into politics. She is a real woman. A real wife, sister, mother, daughter, fully realized adult who never gave up her own dreams and passions.
Her career has been impressive and she serves as the ultimate role model for young people everywhere. If you work hard you will see results. Some of us just have to work a lot harder than others.
This memoir received a lot of hype when it first came out. It took me a year to get the digital rental from my library wait list. It was worth the wait. It deserves every ounce of hype it received.
I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. I will likely be buying copies as gifts for friends and family for years to come. Would it be too passive aggressive to send a copy to my very conservative mother? Just anonymously have it arrive in her mail one day. Maybe she’ll read it, maybe it’ll make her just a little less hate filled? We’ll see.
