Daredevil/Spider-Man, Marvel Comics Review

Author Paul Jenkins, Illustrations Paul Winslade and Tom Palmer

Daredevil/Spider-Man is a crossover mini series that takes ultra serious Daredevil and pairs him with wise cracking Spider-Man. I don’t think Matt Murdock really appreciates Peter Parker’s sense of humor.

There are two different plots going on throughout this book. One is about Kingpin blackmailing Matt Murdock into defending him in court. Guess in this spot on the timeline Kingpin knows Matt Murdock is Daredevil and is using that to his advantage. Kingpin is also blind in this timeline, it’s never explained though.

On the other side of the plot we have a dead Copperhead making zombies and taking sacrifices for Satan. Also the Owl is involved. Um… sure.

These two distinctly different plots never really connect and I’m not sure if they were ever supposed to. Daredevil/Spider-Man is as disjointed as the team up.

There are two big redeeming factors for this book. One is the art.

daredevil and spiderman
yeah grow up peter

It’s bold and vibrant and works well for these two leading men.

The second redemption is that it’s just somehow fun to read. I normally get way deeper into criticism but I dunno… Daredevil/Spider-Man was just kind of fun.

It’s not a great comic book run. It’s confusing and doesn’t have a firm grasp of what it’s supposed to be. But author Jenkins clearly understands the personalities behind the costumes and is enjoying writing all of them. I think that goes a long way into making a book readable.

In addition to the DD and Spidey team up there is the pairing of Foggy Nelson and Black Widow. Jenkins clearly enjoyed writing the way they would behave together, it’s entertaining to say the least.

I’ve liked Daredevil/Spider-Man more than a few other cross overs I’ve read recently so that may also skew my rating. But if you like either of these characters you might as well give it a shot.
