Come Into Me, Graphic Novel Review

Come Into Me by authors Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler, Illustrations Piotr Kowalski

Come Into Me is what would happen if David Cronenberg directed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind mixed with Being John Malcovich but forgot to make it emotional.

That is to say that it’s interesting visually and has the start of some note-worthy philosophy but falls flat on the heart.

It’s about a doctor/research scientist who has figured out a way to transfer consciousness from one body to another via a grotesque tube that looks like intestines.

He intends to get funding and market this invention for some kind of unspecified medical uses. That is until a mysterious woman offers him $50,000 to let her use it for 1 hour. She says she just wants the experience of being someone else.

She suggests that instead of medical applications it should be marketed as the final frontier of social media. Getting to actually be inside of someone else’s mind. Knowing all of the memories and secrets with no filters.

Horrifying. I’ll pass on this one thank you very much but I can kind of see why a niche group could potentially be interested in this sort of thing. People will spend money on anything after all.

Obviously though things go terribly wrong and get out of hand quickly. It wouldn’t be much of a story if it didn’t. The rest of the story follows the woman and the doctor through this debacle.

It deals a lot with what is consciousness, what it means to be alive, how necessary is a human body, and other sorts of modern day philosophical issues. Which would be interesting except I just read the far superior graphic novel Upgrade Soul and that one makes Come Into Me look sophomoric by comparison.

Bad timing on my part but I just can’t help but feel like this one doesn’t come close to the bar that has been set for me now.

The main problem is that I do not care about any of the characters. I honestly don’t care about any of the scary stuff that happens to them no matter how painful looking. I just never was shown any reason why I should.

The two main characters are both pretty unlikable and the authors never give us something relatable to latch onto outside of feeling like you’re ignored sometimes. Yeah, I guess that’s just not enough for me, sorry.

I loved the visuals though so it definitely gets points for that. I’m a huge fan of body horror and this one has it in spades. It’s drawn very well and the formatting was usually easy to follow.

At the end of the day Come Into Me is an aesthetically interesting thought experiment. It just forgot to add the other components that would really make it a story.
