Thank you to author Francois Tremblay for providing me with a copy of She’s Found Her Mind in exchange for this honest review.

She’s Found Her Mind is a self described psuedo-romance. This is fitting for the characters involved. Beef is a meat-head incel who truly believes that white males are superior to all other races and genders and November is a black, professional manic pixie dream girl.

Clearly, this could-be couple has a few obstacles up against them. November, as a manic pixie dream girl, believes it is her fate to change him into the perfect boyfriend. Beef really really really wants to finally get laid.

She’s Found Her Mind is a humorous satirical take on a romantic comedy. The main problem that I had with it, however, is that I really disliked both of these main characters. I know I shouldn’t be rooting for them to get together but it’s harder to enjoy the humor in it when Beef is irredeemable and November is obnoxious.

November does have a turning point in the book that suddenly does make her much more tolerable but it takes a lot of eye rolling at her air-headed cartwheeling to get there. Her dimwitted optimism is necessary for her character to finally get to “find her mind” but it doesn’t make for the most relatable first half of a book.

November has a strong character arc and we get to watch her grow. This plays well off of Beef, who remains firmly in place. He’s in an alpha male cult and does not seeem to ever want to change that. He might just be too deep in the red pill life to be able to ever get out.

Overall the book is smart and plays well with exaggerated stereotypes. It’s exciting to see which tropes are able to evolve and which character types are firmly stuck in place.

At about 3/4 of the way through the novel I was worried there were not enough pages left to complete the story. I was concerned that this would be yet another Part 1 that came at me with no warning. Imagine then my glee when the book actually concluded in a satisfactory way!

Love an ending, they seem to be all too rare nowadays. She’s Found Her Mind actually has a conclusion and even gives us a nice little epilogue for what happens to everyone after the main plot closed.

It’s refreshing to read a contained story with an original premise. She’s Found Her Mind is witty and entertaining and a great alternative to your traditional romance novel.
